The head of the Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games in Paris, Tony Estange, sent a letter to the President of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, in which he apologized for the mistake made by the organizers at the award ceremony for the winners of the men's boxing tournament in the weight up to 92 kg.
Tajik boxer Davlat Boltaev won a bronze medal at the tournament. During the awarding ceremony, the flag of Thailand was raised instead of the flag of the Republic of Tajikistan.
"The Paris 2024 Organizing Committee offers its most sincere apologies to Mr. Boltaev, the National Olympic Committee of Tajikistan and the people of Tajikistan. We fully understand that the moment was missed, and we deeply regret it," the message on the organizing committee's website reads.
Meanwhile, the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games was held in Paris at the Stade de France on August 11. It was attended by French President Emmanuel Macaron, President of the Olympic Committee Thomas Bach and head of UEFA Gianni Infantino, the BBC reports.
After a colorful fantasy show, which was attended by such stars as singer Billie Eilish, American rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers, rapper Snoop Dogg and actor Tom Cruise, Paris Mayor Anna Hidalgo handed over the Olympic flag to Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. It is in this city that the next Olympic Games will be held in 2028.
According to the results of the 2024 Olympic Games, the United States is in the lead in the medal standings - 40 gold, 44 silver and 42 bronze medals. The top 5 also included China (40, 27, 24), Japan (20, 12, 13), Australia (18, 19, 16) and France (16, 25, 22).
Among the countries of Central Asia, the most successful Olympiad was for Uzbekistan, whose athletes won 12 medals – 8 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze. Next are Kazakhstan (1 gold, 3 silver, 3 bronze), Kyrgyzstan (2 silver, 3 bronze) and Tajikistan (3 bronze). Turkmenistan was left without medals.
14 athletes from Tajikistan participated in the Games, the medalists were Somon Mahmadbekov, Temur Rakhimov and Davlat Boltaev.
