DUSAHNBE, March 31, Asia-Plus - Child mortality rate remains high in Tajikistan , Salohiddin Miraliyev, head of the planning and reforms coordination department of the Ministry of Health, remarked at a board ministry on March 30.

“The main reason for such a high infant mortality rate in the country is shortage of vitamin “A,” said Salohiddinov, “Therefore last year 175 medical workers working with primary medical aid facilities last year took training under support of the UNICEF Country Office in Tajikistan on preventing this deficiency.”  Besides, the next stage of distribution of vitamin “A” among the targeted groups was held in June 2005 on sidelines of a Week of Child’s Health, according to him.

Miraliyev said 3,000 copies of informational materials had been distributed among medical workers.

It is to be noted that studies show that Tajikistan has high rates of severe and chronic malnourishment in children.
