KULOB, June 26, Asia-Plus -- On June 24-25, Republican Public Association “Gender and Development” conducted a seminar formally titled “International Standards and National Norms on Implementation of Gender Policy” in Kulob for local journalists and NGOs.

Ms. Nargis Saidova, the “Gender and Development” programs coordinator, has told Asia-Plus that the country’s law on state guarantees, equal rights and opportunities for women and men does not outline precisely a mechanism of the implementation of equal opportunities and now they have to struggle for making changes to this law.

According to her, the “Gender and Development” Public Association has conducted a series of seminars across the country, collecting proposals from the provinces, training journalists in coverage of gender problem in media.

According to this NGO, 16,000 women have lost jobs in the Kulob regions of Khatlon since 1991 and at present correlation between working women and men in the Kulob region is 1:6 with taking into account that a major part of men has left the region for the Russian Federation in search of seasonal work.

During the seminar it was noted that women most were employed in sectors, where an average monthly wage fluctuated from 29 to 55 Somonis, while an average monthly wage in Kulob amounted to 129 Somonis.
