DUSHANBE, November 17, Asia-Plus - A monument to honor servicemen of Kazakhstan’s peacekeeping battalion, the Kazbat, who died in actions during the civil war in Tajikistan, will be erected at the Friendship of Peoples’ Park in Dushanbe next year, according to the Kazakh Embassy in Dushanbe.
A source at the Kazakh Embassy said that an official opening of the monument is time to coincide with a visit of Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev to Tajikistan in 2007.
Servicemen of Kazakhstan’s peacekeeping battalion patrolled some sections of the Tajik-Afghan border from 1992 to 1997, during the civil war in Tajikistan. Over this period, 50 Kazakh servicemen were killed.
