DUSHANBE, May 18, Asia-Plus -- A May 17 torrential rain caused flooding that affected the village of Ningtout in the Shahrinav district, some 25 kilometer west of Dushanbe, Asia-Plus has leaned at the State for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense (CES). 

The source at a CES said that flooding had completely destroyed four houses in the region and damaged some personal plots.  No injured was reported, according to the source.  

Rescue teams were sent to the site of flooding to help victims of the disaster.  

The source also noted mudslides caused by a May 17 torrential rain had seriously damaged the village of Jangalobod in the Vahdat district and the village of Hushyori in Varzob.  In the Varzob district, the mudslide also blocked the 41st kilometer of the highway from Dushanbe to Khujand. 

In the meantime, residents of the Navobod settlement in the Rasht district, some 200 kilometers east of Dushanbe, have still been left without safe drinking water.  

As it had been reported earlier, a May 16 torrential rain caused an increase in the water level in the canal Sangikar at the Navobod settlement of the Rasht district (eastern Tajikistan).  This canal provides with drinking water not only the Navobod settlement but also residents of the nearby communities.  Water in the canal has become so dirty that is not fit for use now.  There are no other sources of drinking water in the area and local authorities are seeking solution to the problem of providing the population with drinking water. 

 We will recall that according to Tajik meteorological service, a storm warning has been announced in the country, and mudslides and rockslides are possible in some areas of the republic.  A north arctic cyclone brought with it heavy rainfalls overnight to Wednesday, while temperatures dropped from 35 degrees above zero to +21C°.   Rains with short intervals will continue till the end of the week.
