DUSHANBE, May 6, 2009, Asia-Plus  -- Tajikistan continues experiencing effects of heavy rainfalls that have hit the country in recent days.

Recent torrential rain has caused a series of mudslides in different regions of the country that have damaged a number of residential buildings, roads and river bank protection works.

According to the Committee for Emergency Situations (CES), mudslides yesterday damaged some 300 meters of the river bank reinforcement works and 15 plots in the village of Chorbogh in Khatlon’s Vose district.

Torrential rain on May 5 caused mudslides that partially damaged four private houses in Dushanbe’s Ismoili Somoni district.

On Monday (May 4), torrential rain caused damage to the Varzob district as well.  There, mudslides damaged four kilometers of road in the Dehoti jamoat and affected 17 households in the village of Toshbuloq and seven households in the village of Buvak.

In the Roudaki district, mudslides damaged some sections of road and destroyed several bridges.  In the Shahrinav district, mudslides damaged several agricultural fields.

Mudslides also caused serious damage to the southern Khatlon province, where they affected agricultural fields in the Qubodiyon district.  Serious situation is also reported in the Muminobod and Panj districts.

“Special commissions are currently working in the mudslide sites to closely monitor the situation and remove effects of natural disasters,” the CES source said, noting that the committee will submit detailed report for consideration to the government within the next few days.
