DUSHANBE, May 7, 2009, Asia-Plus -- A tragedy occurred at the site for construction of the Roghun hydroelectric power station (HPS) on the night of May 5-6.

According to the Ministry of Interior (MoI), two builders, Sayfiddin Taghoyev and Saidali Qosimov, were killed and six others were injured Tuesday night as landslide caused torrential rain hit the site.

“The bodies of Taghoyev and Qosimov were found Wednesday morning,” the source at a MoI said.

In the meantime, Radio Liberty’s Tajik Service reported on May 6 that rainstorms, floods, and mudslides in recent days have killed at least three people in Tajikistan''s southern Khatlon province.

Emergency Situations Committee spokesman Dustmurod Zabirov said that rain and floods along with mudslides have completely or partly destroyed dozens of houses in the Khuroson, Yovon, and Muminobod districts of Khatlon province.

Rain and the resulting floods have demolished houses and agricultural fields in the Panjakent district of the northern Sughd province, the eastern Rasht district, and the Rudaki and Varzob districts surrounding the Tajik capital.

Zabirov told RFE/RL that the government has evacuated dozens of families from dangerous areas and is considering offering them permanent homes for relocation.
