KULOB, March 11, 2010, Asia-Plus  -- Heavy rainfalls may cause landslide that threatens to submerge the village of Kul in the Dahana jamaot of the Kulob district, Pirmad Zaripov, deputy Kulob mayor, said in an interview with Asia-Plus.

According to him, a large landslide containing at least 800,000 cubic meters of slurry threatens to hit the village area.  “New heavy rainfalls will definitely increase the risk of landslide,” Zaripov said.

“A giant mass of slurry overhangs the village area and water has begun leaking from it,” said the deputy mayor, “We are currently developing the program to localize the threat until an active period of mudslides starts.”

He also added that recent heavy rainfalls had affected some 20 hectares of areas under wheat in the Hamadoni district.
