KULOB, May 11, 2010, Asia-Plus -- On Tuesday May 11, a special team of geologists completed a topographic survey of an area in the northeast part of the city of Kulob allotted for construction of a new settlement of people hit by a May 7 disaster, Asia-Plus has learned from the Kulob chief architect Ozod Hasanov.
According to him, 240 hectares have been allotted for construction of the settlement. “A 30-meter safety zone will be established on both banks of the Tebalay River,” said the chief architect, “To establish this safety zone we have to demolish 235 residential buildings in the city and residents of these houses will be relocated to the new settlement. Besides them, residents of a number of villages in the Kulob district whose houses were destroyed completely by recent floods and mudflows will also be relocated to this settlement.”
He added that the commission determined that some 40 percent of residential buildings at the Charmgaroni Poyon Street in Kulob are not suitable for living for their inhabitants. “Practically all 610 houses at this street are partially affected and it would be expedient to demolish all residential buildings at this street” Hasanov said.
We will recall that the Tebalay River breeched its banks on the night of May 6-7 in Kulob and people living in some parts of the city suffered severe damage to their homes. Many people were killed by floods and many others are still missing and feared dead.
