Roads in the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) that were affected by recent snow-slides, rockfalls and mudflows have been cleared of snow and slurry, according to Emergencies Committee under the Government of Tajikistan.
The country’s emergency management agency said on March 31 that 16 avalanches and rockfalls were registered in the region over the past day.
Avalanches and rockfalls reportedly occurred in Shugnan, Ishkashim and Roshtqala districts, and as a result, roads from Khorog to Roshtqala and Murgab were temporarily closed for traffic.
Warmer temperatures have increased the risk of further avalanches in Tajikistan, where dozens of snow-slides have occurred over the past several days, the Emergencies Committee warned on Wednesday.
Recall, twenty-one avalanches, nine mudflows and four rockfalls were reported in some areas of GBAO on March 28 alone.
While most roads are open, people are being advised not to travel to mountain areas unnecessarily.
