Kabul has reportedly handed over the last group of Tajik inmates serving their prison terms in Afghanistan to Dushanbe.

Citing Tajik Ambassador to Afghanistan Sharofiddin Imomov, Radio Liberty’s Tajik Service, locally known as Radio Ozodi, says the last eight Tajiks, who had been serving their terms in Afghan jails, were sent to Dushanbe at the end of last week.

In response to this, the Tajik authorities are expected to hand over 80 Afghans serving their terms in jails in Tajikistan to Kabul.

Not all Afghans serving their terms in Tajik penal colonies will be handed over to the Afghan authorities, Tajik diplomat noted.

“Persons convicted of especially dangerous crimes and involved in terrorist attacks or, you know, drug traffickers wounding our border guards will be left in Tajik penal colonies,” Imomov noted.

Recall, a Tajik-Afghan agreement on a prisoner exchange was signed in 2008.
