A border guard officer has been detained with a large amount of narcotics drugs.

A source within the Interior Ministry says a 25-year-old senior lieutenant who served in the border unit in Darvoz district of the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) was detained in Danghara district (Khatlon province) on December 18 on suspicion of being involved in drug trafficking.

146 kilograms of narcotic drugs were reportedly found in his car.  A totaled included 101 kilograms of raw opium and 45 kilograms of hashish.

The investigation suggests that the detainee entered into a criminal conspiracy with Afghan smugglers to transport drugs to the central regions of Tajikistan.

Criminal proceedings have been instituted against the border guard and an investigation is under way.
