Fozil Obidov has been elected to head the group of the ruling People’s Democratic Party of Tajikistan (PDPT) in the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower house of parliament).
The PDPT held a meeting in Dushanbe on December 11 and the meeting participants unanimously voted for electing Fozil Obidov the head of PDPT’s group in the Majlisi Namoyandagon.
Fozil Obidov, 59, was elected to the Majlisi Namoyandagon in March this year. Prior to this, he served as Rector of Tajik Institute of Entrepreneurship and Service. HE has scientific degree of Doctor of Sciences in Economics.
Recall, the previous head of PDPT’s group in parliament Bakhtovar Safarzoda was resigned as member of Majlisi Namoyandagon on October 1 in connection with his appointment as Permanent Representative of Tajikistan in the Interparliamentary Assembly of the CIS.
A parliamentary group, parliamentary party, or parliamentary caucus is a group consisting of members of the same political party or electoral fusion of parties in a legislative assembly such as a parliament or a city council.
The PDPT organizing committee was established in 1993, and the party itself was established on December 10, 1994. Until April 1998, it was called the People's Party of Tajikistan.
The party stands for a secular state and society (secularism).
The People’s Democratic Party is the largest political party in Tajikistan, boasting more than 500,000 registered members. President Emomali Rahmon is chairman of the party.
The party has its branches in all regions and largest settlements of Tajikistan. The youth wing of the party is called the Sozandagoni Vatan (Creators of the Motherland).
The ruling People’s Democratic Party has secured 47 seats in the 63-seat Majlisi Namoyandagon of new convocation.
In the previous Majlisi Namoyandagon, the PDPT had 51 seats.
