The Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament) has endorsed amendments offered to the country’s law “On the Mountain Regions of the Republic of Tajikistan,” which was adopted on July 22, 2013.

The law on amendments proposed to the RT Law “On the Mountain Regions of the Republic of Tajikistan” is currently pending by the Majlisi Milli (Tajikistan’s upper chamber of parliament).

A new article providing for protection of the environment in the mountain areas has been added to the law “On the Mountain Regions of the Republic of Tajikistan.”

After the amendments come into force, construction of any facilities and any economic or other human activity in the mountain areas will be allowed only after conducting an environmental feasibility study, which considers both human and environmental health factors.

Causing harm to the environment in the mountain areas as a result of economic and other activities will be punished under the current legislation.

Details of the amendments are not yet known, but since 93% of Tajikistan is mountainous, economic and other human activity in the mountain areas is inevitable.
