KHUJAND, April 27, 2011, Asia-Plus -- Local authorities in the northern Sughd province have decided to dump the old Soviet and Russian names of streets
Ms. Karomat Qosimova, deputy chairperson of the city of Qairoqqum, told Asia-Plus Wednesday afternoon that members of local council have unanimously voted for renaming 55 streets in the city and settlements that are subordinate to the city.
“The fifth session of the Qairoqqum legislature took place on April 26 and the legislature members unanimously voted for renaming 55 streets in the city and nearby settlements,” said Qosimova, “In Qairoqqum, the Lenin, Gagarin, Gogol, Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya and Oleg Koshevoy streets were renamed Istiqlol, Bobojon Ghafourov, Jomi, Zebunisso and Omar Khayam streets respectively.”
In the Zarnisor settlement, the Lenin Street has been renamed the Somoniyon Street and the Krasin Street has been renamed the Buston Street. In the Kansay settlement, the Pushkin Street has been renamed the Abdul-Qodir Bedil Street. In the Chorukdarron settlement, the Kalinin and Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya streets have been renamed Stolyarov and Petelin streets respectively.
