DUSHANBE, June 25, 2012, Asia-Plus -- More than 190 graduates from the University of Central Asia’s Aga Khan Humanities Project (AKHP) and Learning Center Dushanbe, School of Professional and Continuing Education (SPCE), were awarded certificates at the 4th Graduation Ceremony held at the Ismaili Centre, Dushanbe on June 23, 2012.
Dilovar Butabekov Head, University of Central Asia’s SPCE, says fifty-nine secondary school and university students were awarded Certificate for completing AKHP’s integrated Humanities in English (HiE) course. The course uses an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the human condition and nature of societies that promote pluralism of ideas, cultures and people in Central Asia, stimulating valuable academic skills such as analytic reasoning, critical thinking, and team work. The graduates are well placed to be highly competitive in pursuing opportunities for further studies at the international level as well as provide intellectual leadership to their peers and communities.
Forty-six students were awarded the Professional Certificate in Accounting Technology (ATC), which prepares graduates for positions as accountants in small enterprises or NGOs, and bookkeepers/accountants in larger enterprises and organizations. ATC is valued at 30 European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits, is based on International Financial Reporting Standards and is the first program of its kind in Central Asia. ATC also prepares students for the forthcoming program leading to the Certified Accounting Practitioner qualification.
Twenty-nine students received a Certificate of Achievement, having completed the requirements of Levels 1 & 3A of the English for Business Program. The program is based on the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) curriculum and SPCE is a registered LCCI examination centre. Seven graduates received LCCI Certificate. Twenty-four students, including eleven from the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, five from the National Social Investment Fund and eight from the Tajik Parliament received Record of Achievement, having completed two levels of Conversational English program.
Twenty-five students received a Professional Certificate in English for Academic purposes. The program is developed in cooperation with University of Ottawa (Canada) to prepare applicants for admission into international universities. The program also prepares students for taking TOEFL and IELTS tests.
AKHP was established in 1997 and became a part of University of Central Asia in 2007. The regional headquarter is based in Dushanbe from where it manages its activities currently ongoing in 23 Universities, 11 colleges and 1 lyceum in Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. Approximately 42,500 students have been exposed to the AKHP curriculum across the region to-date.
The School of Professional and Continuing Education is Central Asia’s first provider of post-secondary, professional short-cycle education giving young people and adults professional and vocational qualifications in a flexible learning format that improve employment and income generating opportunities. The School has learning facilities in Khorog and Dushanbe, Tajikistan; Naryn and Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic; Tekeli and Taldykorgan, Kazakhstan.
The University of Central Asia (UCA) was founded in 2000. The Presidents of Tajikistan, the Kyrgyz Republic, and Kazakhstan, and His Highness the Aga Khan, signed the International Treaty and Charter establishing this secular and private University; ratified by the respective parliaments, and registered with the United Nations. UCA brings with it the commitment and partnership of the broader Aga Khan Development Network.
The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) is a group of development agencies with mandates that include the environment, health, education, architecture, culture, microfinance, rural development, disaster reduction, the promotion of private-sector enterprise and the revitalization of historic cities. AKDN agencies conduct their programs without regard to faith, origin or gender.
