DUSHANBE, July 11, 2014, Asia-Plus -- Khojagii Manziliyu Komunali (State Unitary Enterprise for Housing Services) says the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has allocated funds for construction of solid waste management and recycling facilities in Tajikistan.
At present there are 65 landfills in the country and only four of them, which are located in Dushanbe, Yovon, Khjand and Chkalovsk, have waste decontamination systems, and in several other cities and districts such works have been carried out partially, the source said.
The State Unitary Enterprise for Housing Services has reportedly worked out investment projects that have been submitted for consideration to international financial institutions.
“The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development agreed to support the projects and allocated 22 million U.S. dollars to implement the solid waste management projects in Dushanbe, Khujand, Qurghon Teppa and Tursunzoda.
9 million U.S. dollars were reportedly allocated to the implementation of the Dushanbe solid waste management project, which is aimed at assisting Dushanbe to rehabilitate the existing landfill site and collection points, supply new landfill equipment and supply new collection vehicles, containers and equipment. Other objectives include assisting the city to reorganize and improve solid waste collection and disposal in Dushanbe.
5 million U.S. dollars were allocated to the implementation of the Khujand solid waste management project. The Bank has provided financing for a program of priority capital investments, to improve the municipal solid waste management services in Khujand, the capital of the northern province of Sughd.
The Bank allocated 4 million U.S. dollars to the implementation of the Qughon Teppa solid waste project. The project is supporting an investment program aimed to improve sanitary/operating standards and increase efficiency/coverage of solid waste operations in Qurghon Teppa.
4 million U.S. dollars were allocated to the implementation of the Tursunzoda solid waste project, which is aimed to improve the solid waste management services in Tursunzoda.
The source added that works on construction of solid waste management and recycling facilities would begin this year.
