DUSHANBE, September 1, 2014, Asia-Plus - Lithuanian mountaineers have ascended Lithuania Peak in the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) for the second time.

“The ascent of Lithuania Peak was organized on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the first ascent of this peak,” Mr. Algimantas Jucevichius, the organizer of this expedition, told Asia-Plus in an interview.

According to him, 60 Lithuanian mountaineers participated in the expedition and “four of them, including the 74-year-old Vilius Shaduikis, successfully ascended Lithuania Peak.”  “Vilius Shaduikis is the participant of the first ascent of the peak,” Jucevichius said.

He further added that there are many mountaineers in Lithuania who want to travel to Gorno Badakhshan.  “I think it would be good if our states paid attention to this moment,” Lucevichius noted.

Lithuania Peak rises to 6,080 meters in the Ishkashim Range in Pamir Mountains.  Lithuania Peak was first climbed by a group of Lithuanian alpinists in 1964.
