40 new officially confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) were reported in Tajikistan yesterday, bringing a total number of officially confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the country to 8,065 as of the night of August 16, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the Population (MoHSPP) said.

The number of coronavirus-linked deaths has been reported in the country at 64, according to a MoHSPP.

6,855 (83.8 percent) COVID-19 patients have reportedly recovered in Tajikistan as of the night of August 16, 2020. 

More than 1,000 people in Tajikistan have reportedly been treating COVID-19 at home under supervision of family doctors.    

The COVID-19 pandemic in Tajikistan is part of the worldwide pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).  The virus was confirmed to have spread to Tajikistan when its index cases, in Dushanbe and Khujand, were confirmed on April 30, 2020.  

A source within the Center for Sanitary ad Epidemiological Supervision says Tajikistan will send an application for purchase of coronavirus vaccine in Russia.  

As far as other Central Asian nations are concerned, the number of officially confirmed cases of coronavirus is continuing to increase in them.

In Kazakhstan, the number of officially confirmed coronavirus cases gas been reported at 103,000 as of the evening of August 16, of which 81,558 have recovered and 1,269 have died.

In Uzbekistan, 35,329 cases of COVID-19 have been reported as of the evening of August 16, of which 30,973 have recovered and 232 have died.  Yesterday a group of health workers from Moscow arrived in Tashkent.  During a month, they will help their Uzbek colleagues treat COVID-19 patients.   

In Kyrgyzstan, the number of coronavirus cases as of the evening of August 16 has been 41,865, of which 34,276 have recovered and 1,495 have died.  .   

Turkmenistan is the only country in the Central Asian region that has not officially registered any coronavirus cases, but local hospitals have reportedly been overwhelmed with patients with pneumonia symptoms, some of whom, including medical personnel, have died.

Meanwhile, coronavirus cases around the globe have been reported at 21.6 million as of the night of August 16, 2020, of which 13.6 million have recovered and 774,000 have died.
