The Government of Tajikistan has decided to extend the deadline for reregistration of SIM cards on ID-passports or one more year, a source within the communications service agency told Asia-Plus Tuesday morning.  The previously set deadline is ending today.

“By government’s resolution of February 12, 2022 the deadline for reregistration of SIM cars on ID-passports is extended until February 15, 2023,” the source said.

The reregistration is carried out by mobile-phone-service providers.

The deputy head of the Communications Committee under the Government of Tajikistan, Ilhom Atoyev, told reporters in Dushanbe on January 31 that 5,416,345 SIM cards have been reregistered on ID-passports today, while users of 2,412,465 SIM cards are still  of the reregistration.

“Of those SIM cards that have not yet been reregistered, 1.8 million are active one,” Atoyev noted.

In February 2019, the government issued a decree that defined the rules for SIM-card registration.  In particular, the restrictions were imposed on the number of SIM cards — a citizen does not have the right to purchase more than two SIM cards – not from each operator but in total.

Also, the communications service agency is responsible to organize the next reregistration of SIM-cards.  The SIM-cards reregistration requires those who have passed the previous reregistration on “printed-on-paper” passports to have a passport of 2014 version (plastic passports or ID-card).
