NATO says that a bomb attack has killed one of its soldiers in southern Afghanistan.

A spokesman for NATO forces, Sgt. Brian Jones, says the attack occurred Wednesday morning in southern Kandahar province.

He declined to give the soldier''s nationality or any further details on the incident.

In 2008, 286 foreign troops were killed in Afghanistan, up from 222 the previous year.

NATO has more than 50,000 troops in Afghanistan from 41 countries. About 12,500 troops are stationed in the volatile south, most of them British, Canadian and Dutch.
