Turkmenistan President Serdar Berdimuhamedow is expected to arrive in Dushanbe on a state visit in the first half of April.
According to the Tajik president’s press service, the visit is scheduled for April 10-11.
While in Dushanbe, Turkmen president will hold a number of bilateral meetings with high-ranking Tajik state officials to discuss issues related to state and prospects of further expansion of cooperation between the two countries, an official source within the Tajik president’s press service told Asia-Plus in an interview.
He refrained from giving further detailed of the upcoming visit of Turkmen president to Tajikistan.
Meanwhile, a source within Tajikistan’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) says the first meeting of the Tajikistan-Turkmenistan Business Council and a business forum of entrepreneurs of the two countries will take place in Dushanbe o April 8 and 9.
100 representatives of Turkmenistan, including 70 entrepreneurs, will participate in these events. Tajikistan will be represented at the business forum by more than 200 entrepreneurs, according to the source.
According to data from the Agency for Statistics under the President of Tajikistan, a two-way trade between Tajikistan and India over the first two months of this year has valued at about US$11.8 million, which is 1.9 percent more than in the same period last year.
This consisted of Tajikistan’s exports to Turkmenistan estimated at almost US$200,000 and Tajikistan’s imports from Turkmenistan worth almost US$11.6 million.
According to the Tajik MFA, the diplomatic relations between Tajikistan and Turkmenistan were officially established on January 27, 1993 by signing of the Protocol "On the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and Turkmenistan."
The Embassy of the Republic of Tajikistan has functioned in Ashgabat since February 1993. The Embassy of Turkmenistan operates in Dushanbe as well.
In general, the current state of the Tajik-Turkmen relations has a tendency of phased expansion. The process of practical implementation of the mutual desire of the two countries to work more closely in multi-dimensional cooperation in accordance with the potential and needs of the people reportedly can be seen in bilateral relations.
