DUSHANBE, December 5, Asia-Plus - A news briefing dedicated to the 5 th anniversary of activity of Oxfam GB in Tajikistan will be held in Dushanbe on December 7. 

A source at the Oxfam Dushanbe Office said in an interview with Asia-Plus that Penny Lawrence, Oxfam International Director, Adam Leach the Oxfam Regional Director for the Middle East, Eastern Europe and the CIS, and Olga Gazaryan, the Oxfam Regional Program Manager, are arriving in Tajikistan on this occasion.  

Oxfam has worked in Tajikistan since 2001.  Oxfam''s work involves improving access to food, livelihoods, water and health for those in need.  “Over the past five year, Oxfam has implemented a number of projects that have covered more than 214,000 direct beneficiaries in the Khatlon province,” the source said.  

In Khatlon, Oxfam is providing clean water and sanitation facilities and helping poor people to make a living from agriculture.  “At present we are working in eight districts of Khatlon and our team consists of 48 staffers, including 45 local professionals,” the source said, noting that Oxfam fulfills its commitments on resolving the main challenges, facing the poor sections of the population, and in cooperation with civil society and the government makes contribution to the implementation of the poverty reduction plans.  

 ECHO, Swiss Agency for Cooperation, Oxfam Novib and Oxfam (Hon Kong) help to fund Oxfam’s work in Tajikistan.
