The Tajik youth team finished their performance in the qualifying tournament of the Asian Cup 2026 in the third place of group "K" and failed to make it to the final part of the competition, which will be held from January 7 to January 25, 2026 in Saudi Arabia.
Despite the home format and the support of the fans at the Central Republican Stadium in Dushanbe, the team, led by Levan Khomeriki, failed to take advantage of the chance. Group "K" results: Tajikistan – Nepal - 4:0, Tajikistan – Philippines - 0:1, Tajikistan – Syria - 0:1.
After three rounds, the Tajik youth team scored 3 points, but it was not enough. The victory over Nepal left hope for a way out, but defeats from the Philippines and Syria minimized the chances.
The last round decided the fate of the team. Before the game, it was known that: for the first place, it was necessary to defeat Syria by at least two goals; with a one-goal victory, it was necessary to score at least three goals (for example, 3:2 or 4:3) in order to surpass Syria in additional indicators.
The Tajik national team fought until the last seconds, but in the 90+8 minute missed the decisive goal, which finally deprived the team of any chance of reaching the final stage.

Why couldn't we leave the group
1. Unrealized chances – in the matches against the Philippines and Syria, the team created enough attacks, but the completion failed.
2. Defensive mistakes – the only goals conceded in the two decisive matches were fatal.
3. Psychological pressure – playing at home could turn into additional stress for young players.
4. Lack of experience – the national team included football players, some of whom have no experience of participating in international matches.
What's next?
The failure to qualify for the 2026 Asian Cup was a serious blow, but it is also an important lesson for the youth national team: several U-23 leaders can play for the main national team.
The Tajikistan U-23 national team failed to qualify for the 2026 Asian Cup finals, but gained experience. The team showed strength, but lack of stability and lack of composure in crucial episodes became the key factors of failure.
