DUSHANBE, May 5, Asia-Plus - On Wednesday April 4, Latvia and Belgian Ambassadors presented credentials to President Emomali Rahmon.  

According to presidential press service, in the course of the talks following the credentials-presenting ceremony Latvian Ambassador to Tajikistan Igors Apokins and President Rahmon discuss issues related to establishing active relations between the two countries.

Rahmon noted that Tajikistan is interested in reviving previous economic cooperation with Latvia. For his part, Apokins noted that political leadership of his country is also interested in restoring active economic and trade cooperation with Tajikistan. 

During the meeting, the two exchanged views on ways to expand bilateral cooperation in sectors like transport and communications, science, culture, etc.  Both sides vowed to boost bilateral trade, which currently did not correspondent to its real potential.  

 President Rahmon had the similar meeting with Belgian Ambassador to Tajikistan Christian Mirshman (phonetically spelled), presidential press service said.  “We intend to expand relations with Belgium in the light of the necessity of combining efforts of international community to address modern challenges and threats,” Rahmon said.  Belgian diplomat noted that Tajikistan is an important partner of Belgium in Central Asia and stressed that his country is interested in expansion of many-sided relations with the Tajikistan.  

According to presidential press service, the two declared for expansion of cooperation in politics, economy, transport, communications and science.  The sides also exchanged views on regional and international security, the present situation in Afghanistan, and fight against drug trafficking.
