DUSHANBE, January 22, Asia-Plus -- Compared to 2006 the totaled number of cellular communications subscribers in Tajikistan last year nearly tripled, reaching 2,131,914 people (Tajikistan’s population now exceeds 7 million), Khurshed Rajabmahmadov, the head of the communications department of the Ministry Transport and Communications (MoTC), said.
As of January 1, 2007, the total number of mobile users in the country had been 736,621 people, according to him.
Ten cellular providers now operate in Tajikistan: Tacom; TT-Mobile (MLT); Babilon-Mobile; Indigo-Tajikistan; Indigo-Somoncom; M-Teco; Telecom-Inc (SkyTel); TK-Mobile; Tojik Telecom Mobile; Telecom Technology
The MoTC official added that closed joint-stock company Dilfon, which is licensed to provide cellular communication services in Tajikistan in the GSM-1800 standard, has not yet started working for some technical reasons.
Bailon-Mobile tops Tajikistan’s companies, providing the cellular communications services in the GSM standard, in terms of the number of subscribers, and TK-Mobile stands in the first place among the Tajik companies, providing cellular communications services in the CDMA standard.
