DUSHANBE, May 5, Asia-Plus  -- In late April, some 1,000 residents of the villages of Khoja Sartez and Sino in Khatlon’s Vose were medically examined for tuberculosis, Sadullo Saydaliyev, head physician at Tajikistan’s TB-Prevention Center, said in an interview with Asia-Plus.  

According to him, a mobile team, comprising representatives of the Ministry of Health (MoH), conducted the examination in Vose.  

Vose district is the worst affected district in Tajikistan, and therefore, specialists from the TB-Prevention Center who are involved in implementation of the TB-prevention program designed for 2003-2010 have closely monitored the TB situation in the district.  

The head physician named poverty, natural disasters, unemployment, poor housing conditions and nutrition as factors contributing to the appearance of chronic forms.   

According to the World Health Organization, the TB rate in Tajikistan currently stands at 175 per 10,000 people.

We will recall that speaking at a press conference in Dushanbe last December, Santimo Severoni, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) office in Tajikistan, said that the UN Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has allocated $17 million in assistance to combat tuberculosis in Tajikistan over the next five years.
