According to data of the Agency for Statistics under the Government of Tajikistan, a two-way trade between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan over the first nine months of this year has valued at 8.039 million US dollars, which is 32.6 percent less than in the same period last year.

This consisted of Tajikistan’s exports to Kyrgyzstan estimated at 395,500 US dollars and Tajikistan’s imports from Kyrgyzstan worth 7,643,500 US dollars.

Over the same nine-month period, the bilateral trade between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan has accounted for only about 0.2 percent of Tajikistan’s external trade turnover, which has been amounted to 5,137,958,400 US dollars.

Recall, Kyrgyzstan unilaterally closed its common border with Tajikistan in early May 2021 after an armed conflict along a disputed segment of the border left 36 Kyrgyz nationals, including two children, dead and 154 injured on the Kyrgyz side of the border.

However, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan did not have any significant volumes of turnover in the bilateral trade before the closure of the border as well.

According to Tajikistan’s Agency for Statistics, the two-trade between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan in 2019 valued at 54.2 million US dollars, which was only 1.2 percent of Tajikistan’s external trade turnover.  In 2019, Tajikistan’s exports to Kyrgyzstan accounted for little more 20 percent of the bilateral trade between the two countries and its imports from Kyrgyzstan accounted for about 80 percent of the bilateral trade.
