DUSHANBE/NOUROBOD, June 2, 2009, Asia-Plus  -- Torrential rain and resulting mudflows are continuing to cause damage to Tajikistan.  Landslides happen in the country every year, but they have been stronger than usual this year due to heavy rainfalls.

Torrential rain on June 1 caused a mudslide that demolished 16 plots in the village of Hoji Qala in Khatlon’s Jomi district, according to the Committee for Emergency Situations (CES).

The source at a CES noted that a serious of mudslides happened in Fayzobod district, some 56 kilometers east of Dushanbe, on May 31.  The mudslides destroyed one bridge and partially damaged five others in the district.

In the meantime, another landslide hit the village of Sari Qosh in Nourobod district, some 100 kilometers east of Dushanbe.  The mudslide killed 40 head of cattle and several head of sheep and goats as well as demolished some agricultural fields in the village.
