Torrential rain on January 7 caused a series of rockfalls and landslides that blocked in several places the main highway from Dushanbe to Khorog, the capital of the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO).
The rockfalls and landslides occurred in Shamsiddin-Shohin district of Khatlon province and blocked the highway in three places, according to the Committee on Emergency Situations and Civil Defense (CoES) under the Government of Tajikistan.
The highway is temporarily closed for traffic as the work on clearing it of nearly 2,000 cubic meters of rocks and slurry is under way.
