Afghan media outlets, citing a representative of the Taliban government, report the detention of two individuals in connection with the killing of Chinese nationals in Tajikistan’s border regions.
According to Ehsanullah Kamgar, a spokesperson for the Taliban's Badakhshan security command, the arrests took place on Monday in Maimay district (was created in 2005 from part of Darwaz district – Asia-Plus). The identities of the detained individuals have not been disclosed.
The attack occurred on November 30 in Tajikistan’s Darvoz district. According to Tajik border guards, a terrorist group infiltrated from the Afghan village of Ruzvayak in Badakhshan province and targeted employees of the Chinese road construction company, China Road and Bridge Corporation, in the village of Shodak, Darvoz district in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO). As a result of the attack, two Chinese nationals were killed, and two others were injured.
Following the incident, the Chinese Embassy in Dushanbe called on Tajik authorities to take all necessary measures to protect Chinese citizens and companies operating in the border regions.
In the past week, two armed attacks originating from Afghanistan have occurred in Tajikistan, resulting in the deaths of five Chinese nationals, with another five injured.
One such attack took place on November 26 in Shamsiddin-Shohin district of Khatlon province, when terrorists targeted workers from the company Shohin-SM. Three Chinese nationals were killed, and one was wounded.
Tajik border guards stated that the attack in Darvoz occurred around 6:45 PM local time when terrorists infiltrated Tajikistan and launched the assault on the workers.
Despite Tajikistan's efforts to strengthen security and foster cooperation in the border regions, criminal groups continue to destabilize the situation along the national border.
In response to these incidents, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon convened a working meeting on December 1 with the heads of security and law enforcement agencies. Rahmon condemned the actions of Afghan nationals at the border and instructed officials to take effective measures to prevent further attacks.
