DUSHANBE, February 2, 2011, Asia-Plus -- The human rights situation in Tajikistan and use of dual standards by some international organizations over the human rights protection issues in different regions of the world were a major topic of a meeting of senior representatives of the Islamic Revival Party (IRP) with the European Union (EU) delegation that took place at IRP’s headquarters in Dushanbe on February 1.
The IRP was represented by its leader Muhiddin Kabiri and members of the IRP board Muhammadali Hoit and Hikmatullo Syfullozoda.
The EU delegation members included Ambassador Eduard Auer, Head of the EU Delegation to Tajikistan, Riina Kionka, Advisor on Human Rights (Common Foreign Security Policy) and
Head of Human Rights Unit from the Council of European Union, Odron Perkauskiene, Advisor on Human Rights, Anne Sutula, Advisor to EU Special Representative for Central Asia, and Akvile Normantiene, Head Counselor for Political, Economical and Trade Affairs, the EU Delegation to Tajikistan.
The meeting participants agreed that the IRP plays a certain role in protection of human rights and democratic values in the country and expressed hope that amendments will be made to the country’s election legislation in the near future that will promote further development of democracy in Tajik society, the source said.
