The Khorog events, which took place in July last year, could aggravate socio-political situation in the region for a long period of time, head of GBAO Kodiri Kosim told the reporters at his press conference on February 12th.

“Local and central government authorities have managed to stabilize the situation with the help of the community and initiative groups,” he said.

He said that the Khorog events showed once again that disagreement and conflicts of any type should not be solved by force and mass protests. “The best way to settle such conflicts lies in sensible and fair discussion of causes of the conflict,” he stressed.

K.Kosim also told the reporters about recent efforts made by local authorities towards further socio-economic development of the region. He noted that many economic sectors of the region showed results which demonstrate economic development.

He said that local authorities will have to deal with communication problems to ensure further economic development of the region. He stressed that all roads and highways should meet international standards, while energy capacities should be increased.

“Only this way we will be able to deal with such issues as development of tourism and metal mining industry – two key sectors of further economic development of GBAO,” K.Kosim stressed.
