Speaker of the upper house (Majlisi Milli) of Tajikistan’s parliament (Majlisi Oli), Mahmadsaid Ubaidulloyev, signed a decision on convocation of a joint session of both chambers of the parliament on December 26.

On the same day, President Emomali Rahmon will make his annual address to the nation, a source within the Majlisi Milli told Asia-Plus in an interview.

The joint session of the Majlisi Milli and the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament) will take place at the Kokhi Somon State Complex in Dushanbe.

Heads of all provinces, cities and districts as well as ministries and agencies will also attend the meeting.

Usually, in his address to the parliament, the president discusses the country’s priorities in domestic politics and foreign policy as well as the main economic challenges.

All Tajik national television and radio channels broadcast the president’s annual address.  Students of higher educational institutions as well as senior students of high schools gather in their institutions’ auditoriums to watch president’s annual address.

Speaking at the meeting, Tajik leader, in particular, highlights the main achievements obtained by Tajikistan in the passing year.

Last year, Rahmon, for example, mentioned introduction of the first unit of the Roghun hydropower plant into operation, improvement of relations with Uzbekistan and United Nation’s support for Tajikistan’s ‘water’ initiative among the main achievements obtained by the country last year.

Meanwhile, a regular session of the upper chamber of parliament will take place on December 25 to discuss law adopted by the lower chamber of parliament.
