The ruling People’ Democratic Party of Tajikistan (PDPT) has nominated Dushanbe Mayor Rustam Emomali for the Dushanbe local council (Majlis).

“Rustam Emomali will run for election for election to the Dushanbe Majlis in constituency # 25,” the head of the Dushanbe electoral commission, Abdullo Kholiqov, told Asia-Plus in an interview.

According to him, the PDPT’s organizations in Dushanbe’s Ismoili Somoni district at a conference that took place on January 22.  

Recall, Rustam Emomali, who was nominated by the Tajik ruling party, won by-election to the Dushanbe local council that took place in the same constituency on April 2, 2017.  In 2017, he reportedly won the by-election with a turnout of 86.89 percent of eligible voters.  Rustam Emomali won with 84.81 percent of the vote, with his opponents, Fazliddin Ikromov of the Agrarian Party of Tajikistan and Hikmatullo Saidiyon of the Democratic Party of Tajikistan, garnering just 7.81 and 2.65 percent of the vote respectively.

Former Dushanbe Mayor Mahmadsaid Ubaidulloyev represented constituency # 25 in the Dushanbe legislature.   He announced on February 7, 2017 that he has given up his seat in the city's local parliament.

Mahmadsaid Ubaidulloyev was mayor of Dushanbe for 19 years.  By president’s decree of January 12, 2017 Ubaidulloyev was replaced by President Emomali Rahmon's son, Rustam Emomali.

Ubaidulloyev still remains chairman of the parliament's upper chamber, the Majlisi Milli, which is the second highest post in Tajikistan.
