The Aga Khan Agency for Habitat (AKAH) has presented emergency and humanitarian response items to the Committee of Emergency Situation and Civil Defense (CoESCD) to support the Tajikistan government’s efforts to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.
The items included chlorine, multiple-use coveralls, rubber boots, gloves, protective goggles, antiseptics, and medication. AKAH Tajikistan CEO Hadi Husani presented the items, which were received by the Chairman of CoESCD General Rustam Nazarzoda at their offices in Khorog. Mr Husani reiterated the commitment of AKAH and the other agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) in supporting the government to manage the spread and effects of coronavirus across Tajikistan. “AKAH will continue to be a key partner to CoESCD in managing COVID-19 and the items we have presented today is a reflection of our intention to provide vital and timely support to the government in this regard.”
General Nazarzoda on his part expressed appreciation for the partnership between CoESCD and AKAH in general and this donation in particular, and remarked that it will go a long way in protecting the health of frontline workers who are working tirelessly all across the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast (GBAO) and indeed all across Tajikistan to contain infections and safeguard lives.
About the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat: The Aga Khan Agency for Habitat (AKAH), which merges the capabilities of Focus Humanitarian Assistance, the Aga Khan Planning and Building Services, and the Aga Khan Development Network’s Disaster Risk Management Initiative, focuses on preparing for both sudden and slow-onset disasters. AKAH works to ensure that poor people live in physical settings that are as safe as possible from the effects of natural disasters; that residents who do live in high-risk areas are able to cope with disasters in terms of preparedness and response; and that these settings provide access to social and financial services that lead to greater opportunity and a better quality of life. Initially, priority areas of AKAH will include Afghanistan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, the Kyrgyz Republic, and India.
