DUSHANBE, January 15, Asia-Plus - Tajik Prosecutor-General’s Office will thoroughly support a new agency to fight corruption, the Agency for State Financial Control and Combating Corruption, Tajik chief prosecutor Bobojon Bobokhonov remarked at a news conference in Dushanbe on January 15.

He also added that the prosecutor’s office will oversee and inspect the anticorruption agency as it inspects any other bodies.  According to him, the Agency performing functions previously carried out by the State Financial Control Committee, Main Tax Police Directorate, Directorate for Combating Corruption, and other agencies will be member of the Coordination Council of the Law Enforcement Agencies, which meets once per quarter.

Bobokhonov also criticized poor work of the former Main Tax Police Directorate, noting that last year, 47 investigators from this directorate investigated only 50 criminal cases.

We will recall that President Emomali Rahmonov signed a decree establishing the Agency for State Financial Control and Combating Corruption on January 10, 2007.  Rahmonov has appointed Sherkhon Salimov director of the new agency that will have a staff of 500.
