Afghan media reports say that at least 25 were killed in Afghanistan's north, more than a week after over 100 died from avalanches and heavy snowfall.
Citing local security officials, Afghan Tolo News agency reported on Monday that at least 25 people were killed and six others wounded due to heavy snowfalls in Faryab province over the past few days.
According to local officials, Pashtun Kot, Bilchiragh, Andkhoi and Dawlat Abad districts witnessed heavy snowfalls in past few days.
Faryab security officials confirmed the death toll and said 30 shepherds with nearly 30,000 livestock have disappeared.
Faryab governor Sayed Anwar Sadat said heavy snowfalls killed 25 people, six people were wounded and 3,000 livestock died in Bilchiragh, Pashtun Kot, Qaramqol, Andkhoi and Dawlat Abad districts.
“The past three days' snowfalls in Faryab are unprecedented in last 40 years and have left nearly 60 casualties and also left lots of damages. Security forces are working in Bilchiragh district to reopen routes and all other institutions are trying to deliver aid to the areas,” said governor Sayed Anwar Sadat.
Meanwhile, Faryab police said they have rescued many people stuck in avalanches on Faryab roads.
“At least 70 vehicles with their passengers were rescued from avalanches and snowfalls on Faryab's different roads,” said Faryab police security chief Mir Amanullah.
Tolo News reports that according to Amanullah, roads to five districts of the province were reopened but the residents are facing serious challenges.
