Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian sustained minor leg injuries during an Israeli airstrike on Tehran in June, according to Iranian state-linked news agencies.

Citing Fars News Agency (FNA), which is affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the report states that six Israeli bombs targeted the entrances of a secret underground complex in Tehran on June 16.  The strike allegedly occurred while the Supreme National Security Council was holding a session attended by President Pezeshkian.  He was reportedly injured while being evacuated through an emergency shaft.

Iranian authorities have launched an investigation into a possible leak of sensitive location data.  Officials suspect that Israeli intelligence may have been aided by moles within Iranian government institutions. Israel has not commented on the incident, and there has been no independent confirmation of the strike.

During the 12-day exchange of hostilities between Iran and Israel in June, videos shared on social media showed ongoing shelling in northwestern Tehran.  FNA claims that the strike on the fourth day of the conflict disabled the ventilation system and sealed off entrances to the underground facility, though President Pezeshkian managed to escape to safety.

The Supreme National Security Council is Iran’s top decision-making body after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.  Pezeshkian had earlier accused Israel of attempting to assassinate him.  However, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant dismissed the claim, stating that Israel’s operations were not aimed at regime change.

Israeli airstrikes during the conflict reportedly killed multiple IRGC commanders.  Iranian officials acknowledged the attacks took them by surprise and temporarily paralyzed command structures.  Unconfirmed reports suggest Ayatollah Khamenei himself was also targeted but was successfully evacuated to a secure underground location.

Escalation of hostilities and ceasefire

The conflict escalated on June 13 when Israel launched coordinated strikes on Iran’s nuclear and military infrastructure, claiming it was a preemptive move to halt Iran’s alleged nuclear weapons program. Iran retaliated by firing missiles and drones, insisting its nuclear activities are purely peaceful.

On June 22, the United States conducted strikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities.  U.S. President Donald Trump claimed the sites were destroyed, though intelligence agencies, including the CIA, later questioned that assessment.

Israeli sources say Iran may attempt to extract enriched uranium from beneath a damaged site in Isfahan targeted during Operation Midnight Hammer.

The armed conflict officially ended on June 24 following a ceasefire brokered by the United States and Qatar.
